ABES Engineering College : Two faculty members of Ghaziabad University were suspended on Saturday after they asked a student who was singing to leave the stage during an induction program in public on Friday. The controversy arose after a video of the incident went viral. Sanjay Kumar Singh, principal of ABES College of Engineering, Ghaziabad, said he had suspended professors Mamata Gautam and Shweta Sharma after an inquiry and no action would be taken against the accused.
“I found the video. A high-level inquiry committee has been formed and directed to submit its report within 24 hours. The behavior of these two faculty members was not appropriate and therefore both were terminated with immediate effect,” Singh said in the video.
On October 20, a video of a student allegedly chanting “Jai Shree Ram” in response to another student in the audience went viral on social media. One of the teachers reportedly asked the student to leave the stage, saying that chanting “Jai Shri Ram” had no place in cultural events.
The video sparked outrage among people, especially those associated with Hindutva groups and the public, who demanded action against the faculty.
One of the suspended professors later released a video stating that neither he nor the institute had a problem with the Jai Shree Ram slogan. He also said that he was exposed to a group of people and it caused him emotional distress.
The police said they are investigating the matter and will take necessary action.
