S Somanath, Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation, said that ISRO encountered no problems in the first 100 kilometres. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) announced on Wednesday that the Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft successfully completed another orbit reduction manoeuvre, bringing it even closer to the lunar surface. However, the mission’s key phase is yet to begin, and we are here to shed some light on it.The Vikram lander is scheduled to touchdown on the Moon on August 23. According to ISRO Chairman S Somanath, there were no problems during the first 100 kilometres. He did, however, indicate that the main problem currently rests in precisely detecting the lander’s position from Earth, a critical feature known as the orbit determination process that is crucial. Once accurate, it allows for smooth advancement. The ISRO chairman said that their current attempts to achieve accurate descent have been successful. The anticipated orbit changes are proceeding as expected. He stated that this is quite encouraging and gives him hope for a happy outcome. The successful completion of this step is critical for the succeeding stages. The current mission is proceeding according to schedule, with precise orbit changes and good results.Learnings from Chandrayaan-2Somanath emphasised that the lessons learned from the partially successful Chandrayaan-2 mission in 2019 were crucial. Insights from Chandrayaan-2 have led to improvements in Chandrayaan-3, which now uses moon photos for better location and larger landing area estimations. Extensive testing has been carried out to improve contingency management and resilience in the face of probable setbacks.
