The All India Road Transport Workers’ Federation and the Tamil Nadu Urimai Kural Drivers’ Union announced a two-day strike across the state and called on the government to ban Rapido’s cycle taxi services, intervene and regulate app-based taxi aggregators like Ola, Uber. , Porter and Red Taxi. They demanded that the government explain the difference between them and the restrictionists in terms of remuneration.

The protesters also demand the government to remove the tolls, which remain in place regardless of the contract period. Motorists have called on the government to take action against  private car rental companies. On Wednesday, motorists called for a demonstration at Egmore’s Rajarathinam Stadium to press home their demands.

Those who depend on taxis to get to work experienced delays due to the strike. Sathish Sugumaran, a worker staying overnight in Kandigai in south Chennai, said that since his area rarely has public transport during peak hours, he had to rely on app-based aggregators to commute to work. But because of the strike, he had to wait almost 40 minutes to order a taxi on Monday.

Aruna, a housewife resident of Chromepet, pointed out that since it is the  festival season of Navratri, taxis and auto-rickshaws are already  in demand. With the strike, he’s not sure how they  travel through time.

Tamil Nadu Urimai Kural Transporters Union State Secretary Zahir Hussain said they are currently holding a protest at Little Mountain in Chennai and are urging the government to meet their demands. On Tuesday, they will besiege transport department offices in Madurai, Tiruchirapalli, Coimbatore etc.

“More than 10 unions have supported this protest. Across the state, 1.20 lakh workers are participating in this movement. Ola, Uber and other services will be affected for the next three days, he said.

In June, Transport Minister S S Sivasankar said the Tamil Nadu government had yet to recognize the bike taxis that ply in large numbers in Chennai and Coimbatore, adding that only those with yellow and black license plates could operate as taxis.
