Solar Eclipse Time : A solar eclipse, or Surya grahan, will occur on October 14, 2023. Solar eclipses occur when the moon passes in front of the sun and blocks its light temporarily . Today’s solar eclipse is an annular solar eclipse, also known as the “ring of fire” (“annular” is Latin for “ring-shaped”). 

An annular solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, but when it is farthest  or closest to Earth. According to NASA, the Moon is farther from Earth, so it appears smaller than the Sun and does not completely cover the Sun. It covers only the centre of the sun, 

leaving the outer edges visible as a ring.

Today’s solar eclipse will not be visible in India. It starts at 23:29 IST and lasts for about five minutes and ends at 11:34 IST. 

The solar eclipse will be visible over much of North America. The eclipse is planned to be visible along a path that covers parts of the United States, Mexico and several countries in Central and South America. In the United States, the annular solar eclipse will begin  at 9:13 am. in Oregon. PDT and ends in Texas at 12:03 p.m. CDT according to NASA.

Although the October 14 annular solar eclipse will not be visible in India, NASA will be able to watch a live stream on YouTube. 

Solar Eclipse Time : Celestial events in October 

October 2023 is a rare month to see both solar and lunar eclipses. Two celestial events occur every two weeks. The lunar eclipse on October 29 is the second lunar eclipse of the year. In addition, sky watchers can also witness the Orionids meteor shower this month. This year, the Orionids peak  between midnight and dawn on October 21 (October 22 in India), falling at up to 25  stars an hour, according to Jake Foster, public astronomy officer at the Royal Observatory.
