Yashbardhan Chauhan produced a superb all-round performance as India Under-19 defeated Australia Under-19 by 103 runs in Rajkot on September 21. The victory gave India an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match Youth ODI series with one game still to play.
Chauhan first scored a brilliant 122 off 100 balls before returning with the ball to claim two wickets. His performance played a major role in India’s convincing win.
India U-19 post 341 after Chauhan’s century
After being asked to bat first, India Under-19 put up an imposing 341 for 7 in their 50 overs.
Chauhan was the standout batter, producing an aggressive century at the top of the order. His 122-run knock included 15 fours and two sixes.
He also combined with VK Vineeth for a crucial 132-run partnership for the third wicket, giving India control of the innings.
Vineeth scored 87 from 92 deliveries, hitting four fours and six sixes. At the other end, Aaryavir Sehwag provided useful momentum with 47 off 48 balls.
India were 233 for 3 when Vineeth was dismissed in the 40th over, but the home side accelerated strongly during the final ten overs.
Kushagra Ojha provided the late fireworks, smashing 34 off just 20 balls, including five fours and a six. India added 106 runs in the final ten overs to finish on 341.
Australia’s Thomas Vaseo was the pick of their bowlers, taking three wickets for 78 runs from his 10 overs.
Australia U-19 struggle during 342-run chase
Australia needed 342 runs to stay alive in the series, but their chase never reached the required scoring rate consistently.
Captain Jack Czosnek and Matthew Lough briefly gave Australia hope. Lough scored 42 from 40 balls, while Czosnek made an attacking 81 off 63 deliveries.
Czosnek’s innings included seven fours and four sixes.
The pair put together a 99-run fourth-wicket partnership, helping Australia recover after they had slipped to 72 for 3.
However, India’s bowlers regained control after Czosnek was dismissed by Kavya Paresh Patel in the 27th over.
Australia lose final six wickets for 38 runs
Blake Cattle attempted to keep the chase alive with a 44-run innings from 46 balls, but wickets continued to fall at the other end.
Australia eventually collapsed from a competitive position and were bowled out for 238 in 41.1 overs.
The visitors lost their final six wickets for only 38 runs, ending their hopes of chasing down India’s imposing total.
Venkata and Chauhan lead India’s bowling attack
Chigurupati Venkata finished as India’s leading wicket-taker with 3 for 64.
Chauhan completed his impressive all-round display with 2 for 56, adding important wickets after his century earlier in the match.
Kavya Paresh Patel was particularly economical, taking 2 for 23 from seven overs. Mohit Ulva also impressed with 1 for 19 from his seven overs.
India U-19 take unassailable series lead
The 103-run victory means India Under-19 have won the three-match Youth ODI series with one match remaining.
The result also underlined the depth in India’s Under-19 setup, with Chauhan leading the way with both bat and ball.
The third and final match will give Australia an opportunity to finish the series with a victory, while India will look to complete a clean sweep.
