Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as Vinayak Chaturthi or Ganeshotsav, is an important Hindu festival celebrated with great fanfare across India. The festival celebrates the birth of Lord Ganesha, a Hindu deity and the  son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.Lord Ganesha is worshipped in India as the god of fresh beginnings, the remover of barriers, and the god of wisdom and intellect, notably in the states of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Goa.

Clay idols of Ganesha are placed both privately in people’s homes and publicly in grand pandals to celebrate the occasion. The daily prasad, which includes delicacies such as modaka, believed to be Ganesha’s favourite sweet, is prepared along with prayers and fasting. The festival ends on the tenth day, when the idol is carried through the streets and immersed in nearby bodies of water. 

 When is Ganesh Chaturthi? September 18th or 19th? 

Ganesh Chaturthi usually takes place in August-September during the Hindu month of Bhadrapada. As Ganeshotsav draws nearer, uncertainty about the exact start date of the festival is increasing, with many people  wondering whether the celebrations will begin on September 18 or 19. According to Hindu scriptures, Lord Ganesha was born in Shukla Paksha, which corresponds to the Gregorian months of August or September in the Bhadrapada Hindu calendar.Ganesh Chaturthi will be celebrated on Tuesday, September 19, 2023 and  the tenth day, Ganesh Visarjan, will be celebrated on Thursday, September 28, 2023. 

 According to Drik Panchang, the auspicious time to greet Lord Ganesha at home on Chaturthi Tith starts from 18.09.2023 at 12.39 PM and ends on 19.09.2023 at 1.43 PM. The ten-day Ganesha Utsav festival ends on September 28 with the Ganesha Visarjan.
