X Launches Standalone ‘X Chat’ App in iOS Beta, Pushing Closer to ‘Everything App’ Vision

Lucknow, March 4, 2026 — Elon Musk’s social media platform X (formerly Twitter) has taken a significant step in its ambition to become an all-encompassing “everything app” by launching a standalone messaging application called X Chat. The app, currently in limited beta testing for iOS users, separates private messaging from the main X platform, offering a cleaner, faster experience focused solely on communication.

The beta, distributed through Apple’s TestFlight program, was opened to an initial wave of 1,000 users, which reportedly filled up within hours, indicating strong early interest. Testers have described the app as more streamlined and responsive compared to the integrated direct messages (DMs) in the main X app. Chats sync seamlessly across the standalone iOS app, the primary X application, web-based chat.x.com, and legacy DMs remain accessible in a unified inbox.

This development builds on X’s major messaging overhaul rolled out in late 2025. Features introduced under the “Chat” or “XChat” branding include:

  • End-to-end encryption for messages and file sharing
  • Disappearing/vanishing messages
  • Ability to edit, delete, or mark messages as unread
  • Audio and video calls (with voice notes reportedly in the pipeline)
  • Screenshot blocking with alerts
  • Unrestricted file sharing and media previews within chats

Elon Musk has positioned the upgraded system as one of the “least insecure” messaging platforms available, drawing comparisons to a peer-to-peer encryption model “kind of similar to Bitcoin.” He has repeatedly emphasized its superiority over competitors like WhatsApp and Signal in terms of privacy and security, while criticizing rivals for perceived shortcomings.

The standalone app represents the next phase of this evolution. Musk confirmed earlier that a dedicated X Chat mobile app would eventually arrive, allowing users to handle messaging independently of the social feed. This move directly challenges dominant players such as WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal by combining X’s existing user base with advanced privacy tools—no phone number required for calls—and potential future integrations like payments.

While the core encrypted chat features have been rolling out progressively since November 2025 (starting on iOS and web, with Android support following), the dedicated app addresses user feedback about wanting a distraction-free messaging interface. Some early adopters have praised its speed, though broader rollout details, including Android availability and full public release, remain forthcoming.

The launch aligns with Musk’s long-term goal of transforming X into a multifaceted platform encompassing social networking, secure communication, payments, and more. As beta testing continues and user feedback rolls in, X Chat could reshape how millions handle private conversations in an increasingly privacy-conscious digital landscape.

For now, access remains invite-only via TestFlight for eligible iOS users, with wider availability expected in the coming months. Update your X app to explore the enhanced Chat features in the meantime, or watch chat.x.com for the web experience.
