The preparations for the IPL 2027 season are beginning to take shape, with all ten franchises looking closely at their squads ahead of the upcoming mini-auction. While teams are yet to announce their final retention lists, former Indian cricketer Cheteshwar Pujara has shared his thoughts on the possible changes that could take place.
Speaking on Star Sports, Pujara discussed several players whose futures could become a talking point before the November 17 retention deadline. He also identified the teams that might make significant changes and those that are likely to continue with their existing combinations.
According to Pujara, Kolkata Knight Riders could be one of the most active franchises in terms of releasing players. The team may need to reconsider some of its expensive signings as it prepares for the next season.
Cameron Green and Nicholas Pooran in Focus
Cameron Green is among the biggest names discussed ahead of the auction. Kolkata Knight Riders secured the Australian all-rounder for Rs 25.20 crore at the IPL 2026 auction. Despite the huge investment, Pujara believes KKR could consider releasing him.
However, he also pointed out that the franchise might attempt to buy Green again during the auction if it decides to release him.
Another player whose future could attract attention is Nicholas Pooran. The Lucknow Super Giants batter was retained for Rs 21 crore but struggled to deliver the expected performances during IPL 2026.
Pujara believes LSG could consider releasing Pooran to free up money for other players. Alternatively, the franchise might retain him and look at releasing Ayush Badoni instead.
Other Teams Could Also Make Difficult Decisions
Pujara also discussed possible changes involving other franchises. Chennai Super Kings could face a decision between Matt Henry and Matthew Short, while Gujarat Titans may have to choose between Rahul Tewatia and Shahrukh Khan.
Punjab Kings could consider releasing Xavier Bartlett or Lockie Ferguson. Meanwhile, Sunrisers Hyderabad may review the positions of experienced Indian pacers Jaydev Unadkat and Harshal Patel.
These are potential decisions rather than confirmed releases, but they highlight the selection challenges teams could face before finalising their squads.
Mumbai Indians May Surprise With Their Decisions
Mumbai Indians could also be among the teams making notable changes ahead of IPL 2027. Pujara suggested that the franchise might surprise everyone with its release decisions.
There has also been speculation about Hardik Pandya’s future, adding another layer of interest to Mumbai’s retention plans. The franchise will have to consider its long-term combination while deciding which players to retain.
In contrast, Pujara does not expect Royal Challengers Bengaluru to make many changes. He believes the defending champions already have a well-balanced squad and should continue with their existing players.
“RCB, because they have a balanced squad and they don’t need to look for players,” Pujara said.
IPL 2027 Mini-Auction Scheduled for December 16
The IPL 2027 mini-auction is scheduled to take place in Goa on December 16, 2026. Before that, all ten franchises must submit their retention lists by November 17.
The final decisions will determine which players remain with their current teams and who becomes available for the auction.
With several high-value players potentially being considered for release, the retention announcements could be just as interesting as the auction itself. Fans will now be waiting to see whether Pujara’s predictions match the decisions made by the franchises.
