Suriya’s Latest Film Scene Gets Off to a Strong Start, Outperforms Karuppu and Vishwanath & Sons

The Jithu Madhavan-directed thriller has collected Rs 19.15 crore nett in India on its first day, giving Suriya a better opening than his previous two releases this year.

Suriya’s latest film, Scene, has started its theatrical journey on a positive note. The Tamil thriller, which arrived in cinemas ahead of the Diwali celebrations, has attracted considerable attention at the box office, recording a stronger opening than the actor’s earlier releases, Karuppu and Vishwanath & Sons.

The film earned an estimated Rs 19.15 crore nett in India on its opening day, according to trade figures reported by Sacnilk. Its performance has given Suriya another encouraging start at the box office, particularly after his previous two films also enjoyed successful theatrical runs.

Directed by Jithu Madhavan, Scene is his first Tamil-language directorial project. The filmmaker is known for his work in Malayalam cinema, and the new film brings him together with Suriya, Nazriya Nazim and Naslen.

Tamil Version Contributes the Majority of Scene’s Opening Collection

The film’s business has been led by its Tamil-language version, which contributed approximately Rs 16.15 crore to the domestic opening. The Telugu-dubbed version added around Rs 3 crore.

Outside India, the film reportedly collected another Rs 12 crore, taking its estimated worldwide opening-day gross to approximately Rs 31 crore.

The festive release window has provided the film with an opportunity to attract a wider audience. Its performance over the first weekend will be important in determining whether it can maintain the momentum generated by its opening.

How Scene Compares With Suriya’s Previous Films

With Scene, Suriya has improved on the opening-day figures of both his earlier releases in 2026.

Karuppu, which was released in May under the direction of RJ Balaji, collected approximately Rs 15.50 crore on its first day. The film earned Rs 13.10 crore from Tamil screenings and Rs 2.40 crore from Telugu markets.

His August release, Vishwanath & Sons, recorded an opening of Rs 15.35 crore, including Rs 9.15 crore from Tamil and Rs 6.20 crore from Telugu.

In comparison, Scene has managed to cross both opening figures with its Rs 19.15 crore domestic nett collection.

The earlier films also recorded substantial lifetime collections. Karuppu reportedly earned Rs 310.12 crore worldwide, while Vishwanath & Sons collected around Rs 209.46 crore.

Scene Has a Long Way to Go to Challenge the Biggest Openers

Despite its encouraging start, Scene remains behind the year’s biggest opening-day performers in Tamil cinema.

Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 reportedly opened with Rs 59.70 crore, while Vijay’s Jana Nayagan registered approximately Rs 42.70 crore on its first day.

For Suriya’s film, the immediate focus will be on maintaining audience interest during the Diwali period. Strong weekend numbers could further improve its position in the box office race.

What Makes Scene Different?

Unlike a conventional action drama, Scene revolves around a police investigation that takes an unexpected direction.

The story follows a police officer who is forced to revisit a case that was believed to be closed. When a secret is accidentally exposed, the investigation leads him towards a contract killer. The resulting conflict develops into a cat-and-mouse game with several twists.

Suriya leads the cast, with Nazriya Nazim and Naslen appearing alongside him. Anandaraj, Lal, Rajpriyan, Suresh Mathiyalagan and Gajaraj are also part of the film.

The project is produced by 2D Entertainment, the production company associated with Suriya and Jyothika, in collaboration with Zhagaram Studios. Jithu Madhavan has written and directed the film, while Sushin Shyam has composed its music.

For now, Scene has delivered the opening Suriya would have hoped for. The film’s performance over the next few days will reveal whether its promising beginning can translate into another major box office success.
