Asian Games 2026: India Beat China 1-0 to Win Women’s Hockey Gold After 44 Years

India created a memorable chapter in its Asian Games hockey history on Friday, defeating defending champions China 1-0 in the women’s final to win the gold medal.

The victory ended India’s 44-year wait for another Asian Games women’s hockey title. India last stood at the top of the podium in the event in 1982.

The decisive goal came from Lalremsiami, who marked her 200th international appearance with a spectacular finish. At the other end, veteran goalkeeper Savita played a crucial role, making a vital penalty-stroke save to keep India in front.

Lalremsiami Produces a Moment of Magic

China started the final with greater possession and attempted to establish pressure from the opening minutes. India, however, were quick to create an opportunity when Baljeet Kaur and Ishika combined inside the Chinese 23-metre area.

China’s defence managed to clear the danger, but India soon found the breakthrough.

In the 10th minute, Salima Tete began a swift attacking move before linking up with Sakshi Rana. Sakshi then picked out Lalremsiami, who unleashed a superb reverse-stick shot from a difficult angle.

The ball found the back of the net, giving India a 1-0 lead.

India nearly doubled their advantage shortly afterwards. A combination between Baljeet Kaur and Navneet Kaur opened space on the right, but Navneet’s attempt from a penalty corner narrowly missed the target.

Savita’s Crucial Penalty Save

China gradually increased the pressure and began creating more entries into India’s circle.

The Chinese side won a penalty corner in the second quarter and attempted a variation designed to produce a deflection. India’s defenders managed to block the effort, while another penalty corner soon followed.

Navneet Kaur made an important goal-line intervention to deny China.

The biggest defensive moment arrived soon after when China were awarded a penalty stroke following an attack inside the Indian circle.

Savita stepped up to face the challenge.

The experienced goalkeeper dived to her left and produced an outstanding save, denying China their best opportunity to equalise and preserving India’s one-goal advantage.

India Survive More Chinese Pressure

China continued to control more of the ball and generated more circle entries, but India’s defensive structure remained organised.

Shilpi Dabas also made an important interception near the goal-mouth, preventing another dangerous Chinese attack.

India went into half-time with their 1-0 advantage intact despite China holding more possession and creating more attacking entries.

India Successfully Challenge Another Penalty Decision

The third quarter brought another tense moment.

China won a penalty corner in the 33rd minute and were initially awarded a penalty stroke after the ball appeared to hit Navneet Kaur’s foot.

India immediately used their video referral.

The review overturned the penalty-stroke decision and reduced it to a penalty corner. China were unable to convert the opportunity, while Salima Tete made another important defensive block.

Tete suffered an injury to her right hand during the intervention and temporarily left the field for treatment.

The quarter ended without another goal, leaving India just 15 minutes away from the gold medal.

China Push Hard Until the Final Hooter

The final quarter was dominated by Chinese pressure as the defending champions searched desperately for an equaliser.

India’s defence remained disciplined, with the players maintaining their shape and clearing dangerous attacks whenever China entered the circle.

China’s earlier advantage in possession and circle entries did not translate into a goal. India continued to protect the narrow lead established by Lalremsiami.

When the final hooter sounded, the scoreboard still read India 1-0 China.

India Crowned Asian Games Champions

India’s victory brought an end to a 44-year wait for Asian Games women’s hockey gold.

Lalremsiami’s brilliant goal proved decisive, while Savita’s penalty-stroke save and India’s collective defensive effort played an equally important role.

For Salima Tete’s side, the 1-0 win over China delivered a historic Asian Games triumph and another significant moment for Indian women’s hockey.
