DGCA Slaps Rs 22.20 Crore Fine on IndiGo for December 2025 Flight Chaos

New Delhi Update: The DGCA has hit IndiGo with a Rs 22.20 crore penalty and reprimanded its top brass after uncovering major operational failures during the airline’s massive disruptions from December 3-5, 2025. Over 2,507 flights got cancelled, 1,852 faced delays, and 3 lakh+ passengers were left high and dry at Indian airports.

IndiGo’s parent, InterGlobe Aviation, confirmed receipt of the orders. In a board statement, they vowed swift, measured responses to reassure customers, backed by an internal overhaul of processes after nearly two decades of strong performance.

Why Did IndiGo Flights Collapse in December 2025?

A Ministry-directed DGCA probe revealed critical lapses fueling the IndiGo December disruptions:

  • Extreme schedule squeezing without safety cushions.
  • Flimsy software and poor prep for new FDTL rules.
  • Oversight failures in crew management and fatigue controls.

Crew plans over-relied on swaps, dead-heads, and long duties, leaving no room for hiccups.

Tough DGCA Actions Against IndiGo Leadership

Enforcement targeted IndiGo fined 22 crore culprits:

  • CEO cautioned for crisis mismanagement.
  • COO warned on schedule impact assessment.
  • Operations SVP sidelined from key duties.
  • Flags to flight ops deputy, crew AVP, and director.

IndiGo to act on more staff and file DGCA report.

Penalty Details: Rs 22 Crore Breakdown

  • Rs 1.80 crore for 6 CAR breaches (FDTL, controls, oversight).
  • Rs 20.40 crore for 68-day FDTL violations (Rs 30L/day).

A Rs 50 crore bank guarantee locks in reforms across leadership, planning, tech, and compliance—DGCA-verified phases.

Relief for Stranded Flyers and Next Steps

IndiGo delivered refunds, payouts, and Rs 10,000 vouchers for 3+ hour disruptions. DGCA faces its own MoCA-mandated review.

This DGCA IndiGo penalty underscores zero tolerance for safety risks in aviation.
