India strengthened their position in the second Test against Sri Lanka after a brilliant century from Dhruv Jurel helped the visitors post a massive first-innings total at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo.
Jurel remained unbeaten on 115 from 177 deliveries as India declared at 503/9. The visitors then made an immediate impact with the ball, reducing Sri Lanka to 8/2 before the close of play.
Jurel Produces Another Test Hundred
India resumed Day 2 on 300/5 and suffered an early setback when debutant Saransh Jain was dismissed after adding only seven runs to the overnight score.
Jurel was then joined by Rishabh Pant, and the pair settled into the innings during the first session. Their partnership helped India reach 419/6 at lunch, with the duo adding 112 runs for the seventh wicket.
Pant eventually fell for a valuable 63, caught by Lahiru Udara off Keshara Nuwantha’s bowling.
Jurel continued his innings with Manav Suthar, who contributed 18 during a 54-run partnership. After Suthar was dismissed, Mohammed Siraj stayed at the crease and helped Jurel move closer to his century.
Rain Delays Jurel’s Milestone
Jurel was just five runs short of three figures when heavy rain interrupted play with India’s score on 475/8.
More than two hours were lost because of the weather, but the break did little to affect Jurel’s concentration.
After play resumed, the wicketkeeper-batter spent 22 deliveries on 99 before finally finding the single he needed. A push towards mid-off brought up his second Test century.
Jurel’s unbeaten 115 came from 177 balls and included a determined display of batting under pressure.
India Cross 500 Before Declaring
Siraj was dismissed soon after Jurel reached his hundred, but Prasidh Krishna helped India move beyond the 500-run mark.
Krishna struck a low full toss from Asitha Fernando through the covers, after which India declared at 503/9 as the light began to fade.
Jurel’s century added to a strong batting performance from India. Devdutt Padikkal had earlier scored 117, while Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant also contributed half-centuries.
Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ravindra Jadeja and Manav Suthar added useful runs to give India a commanding total.
Fernando Shines Despite Sri Lanka’s Struggles
Asitha Fernando was once again Sri Lanka’s most successful bowler. He finished with 4/106, while Prabath Jayasuriya claimed two wickets for 132 runs.
Sri Lanka’s reply, however, got off to a disastrous start.
With fading light on India’s side, Prasidh Krishna struck first by dismissing Lahiru Udara for just one run. Jaiswal completed an impressive diving catch at third slip to remove the opener.
Manav Suthar then delivered another blow on the final ball of the day, trapping nightwatchman Prabath Jayasuriya lbw for two.
Sri Lanka ended the day at 8/2, leaving them 495 runs behind India with eight first-innings wickets remaining.
India in Firm Control
India now have a huge advantage heading into the next day’s play. Jurel’s unbeaten century has given the visitors a massive platform, while the early wickets have put Sri Lanka under immediate pressure.
With Kamil Mishara unbeaten on five at stumps, Sri Lanka will need a major batting effort to stay in the contest.
For India, the combination of a 503-run total and two late wickets has put them firmly in control of the Colombo Test.
