India concluded the 2026 Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships in dominant fashion, capturing four of the five available gold medals on the final day of competition at the Thyagaraj Sports Complex in New Delhi. The biggest highlights were the singles triumphs of Ankur Bhattacharjee and Yashaswini Ghorpade, who produced impressive performances to claim the men’s and women’s titles.
Ankur Bhattacharjee Fights Back to Lift Maiden Commonwealth Singles Crown
The men’s singles final between Ankur Bhattacharjee and Payas Jain turned into one of the most entertaining matches of the tournament.
Payas looked set for victory after taking a 3-2 lead with his aggressive attacking game. However, Ankur refused to give up. He found his rhythm in the sixth game, improving his returns and forcing the contest into a decider.
The final game was equally dramatic. Ankur briefly lost momentum after protesting a service call, but a timely timeout helped him regroup. He returned with renewed confidence to complete a remarkable comeback and secure the biggest singles title of his career.
Yashaswini Ghorpade Defeats Sreeja Akula for Women’s Title
In the women’s singles final, Yashaswini Ghorpade delivered a composed performance to overcome experienced paddler Sreeja Akula.
Yashaswini dominated the opening two games with aggressive forehand strokes and excellent placement. Although Sreeja fought back by claiming the third game, Yashaswini stayed calm under pressure and sealed the match in five games.
The victory also helped her bounce back after finishing as runner-up in the women’s doubles competition earlier on the same day.
Challenging Road to the Finals
Neither champion had an easy journey to the title.
Ankur booked his place in the final after defeating Manav Thakkar, while Payas Jain eliminated Manush Shah in the other semifinal.
In the women’s draw, Yashaswini survived a hard-fought seven-game battle against Sutirtha Mukherjee, while Sreeja Akula edged past Syndrela Das in another marathon semifinal.
India Ends Tournament with Four Gold Medals
India enjoyed a highly successful campaign, winning gold medals in almost every major category.
