Vijay Sethupathi’s acclaimed Tamil film Maharaja is heading towards an international remake, with the film’s producers confirming that a Hollywood adaptation is in development.
The announcement was made on social media on Wednesday, marking a significant development for Tamil cinema. The producers described the project as a major milestone, saying Maharaja will become the first Tamil film to be remade in Hollywood by a major studio.
The news quickly drew reactions from fans, with many praising director Nithilan Saminathan and actor Vijay Sethupathi for taking the film to a global audience.
Is Matthew McConaughey Joining the Maharaja Remake?
Rumours surrounding the Hollywood version have intensified after several social media reports linked Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey to the project.
However, his involvement has not been officially confirmed.
Producer Sudhan Sundaram, speaking to The Times of India, said the film’s strong performance in China attracted interest from an international agency, which subsequently approached the producers regarding the remake rights.
According to Sundaram, an A-list Hollywood actor is being considered for the project and the remake is expected to go on floors next year.
When asked specifically about McConaughey, Sundaram reportedly said that he could be among the actors being discussed, but the agency would be responsible for confirming the casting.
For now, there is no official confirmation that McConaughey has signed the film.
Why Maharaja Is Getting a Hollywood Remake
Directed by Nithilan Saminathan, Maharaja is a neo-noir thriller that combines crime, revenge and an emotional father-daughter storyline.
The film follows a barber who approaches the police after a household dustbin, which he calls “Lakshmi”, goes missing. What initially appears to be a simple complaint gradually develops into a much more serious investigation.
The unusual premise and layered storytelling helped the film receive widespread attention after its theatrical release.
Maharaja Cast and Production
Maharaja features Vijay Sethupathi in the lead role alongside Anurag Kashyap, Sachana Namidass, Natty Subramaniam and Mamta Mohandas, among others.
The film was produced by The Route, Think Studios and Passion Studios and released in June 2024.
Vijay Sethupathi’s performance and Nithilan Saminathan’s direction received considerable appreciation from audiences and critics.
Maharaja Box Office Performance
The Tamil film also achieved strong commercial results.
According to trade figures cited by Sacnilk, Maharaja collected around ₹72.43 crore net in India and approximately ₹199.20 crore worldwide.
The film went on to become one of the highest-grossing Tamil releases of 2024.
Its performance in China also played a role in generating international interest, according to producer Sudhan Sundaram.
Hindi Remake Also Reportedly in Development
The Hollywood adaptation isn’t the only remake associated with Maharaja.
Bollywood actor and filmmaker Aamir Khan has reportedly acquired the rights for a Hindi-language remake. Details about the Hindi adaptation, including its cast and director, have yet to be officially announced.
With both Hollywood and Hindi adaptations reportedly in development, Maharaja is now attracting attention beyond the Tamil film industry.
The original film is currently available to stream on Netflix.
