Tamim Iqbal Named New President Of Bangladesh Cricket Board Amid Major Overhaul

Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal has been appointed president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), taking charge of an interim leadership team after the dissolution of the Aminul Islam‑led board over election irregularities. At 37 years old, Tamim becomes the youngest person ever to hold the post of BCB president, marking a fresh chapter in the country’s cricket administration.

Why The Old Board Was Axed

The National Sports Council (NSC) dissolved the existing BCB board after an investigation panel flagged irregularities in the October 2025 elections, which had placed Aminul Islam at the helm. A five‑member probe submitted its report on April 5, 2026, concluding that the board had not been formed in a proper or transparent manner.

NSC sports director Aminul Ehsan confirmed the dissolution and stated that the previous board could not carry out its work properly, while the International Cricket Council (ICC) has been officially notified about the change.

Tamim’s Interim Committee And Mandate

Tamim will now lead an 11‑member ad‑hoc committee that will manage all cricketing and administrative affairs of the BCB for the next three months. A key part of his mandate is to organise fresh elections within this period so that the board can return to an elected structure.

The interim panel includes former cricketers and officials such as Athar Ali Khan, Minhajul Abedin, and several other ex‑players and administrators, giving the setup a mix of on‑field experience and governance background.

A Long‑Standing Dispute Culminates In A New Role

Tamim’s appointment comes directly from a long‑running dispute over the October 2025 BCB elections, in which he had initially contested but later withdrew his nomination, accusing Aminul Islam of interference. He subsequently lodged a formal complaint with the NSC, demanding an investigation into the election process, making this latest decision a pivotal turn in the saga.

As one of Bangladesh’s most recognisable and outspoken cricketers, Tamim now moves from the dressing room to the boardroom, with millions of fans watching whether he can turn his on‑field leadership qualities into stable, transparent administration.

What Lies Ahead For Bangladesh Cricket

With the ICC monitoring the situation, the three‑month transitional period will be crucial for reforms in areas like cricket‑board elections, contracts, and long‑term planning. If Tamim’s interim committee can lay a clean foundation, the next elected board could inherit a more professional and accountable structure.

For now, the message is clear: Bangladesh cricket is entering a brief but high‑stakes transition phase, with Tamim Iqbal at the controls.
