World Cup fantasy is over! Sanju Samson is probably not going to play in the 2023 Asia Cup

Must Read

For Kerala batsman Sanju Samson, his dream of competing in the ODI World Cup 2023 is almost certainly ended. One could see this as a reaction to India’s shocking defeat to West Indies in the recent five-match T20 series played in the Caribbean.

Sanju Samson, a wicket keeper and batsman who managed scores of 12, 7, and 13 in three games in addition to 9 and 51 in ODIs, may not be selected for India’s 15-man ODI team for the Asia Cup 2023, according to the Times of India.

In layman’s terms, it indicates that Sanju Samson’s options for the ODI World Cup 2023 are now all but gone.

India will meet Pakistan in the opening match of the 2023 Asia Cup on September 2, which will kick off in Multan on August 30.At this point (on August 20), it is expected that the selectors will only choose one side for the Asia Cup. A source told TOI that the World Cup 2023 team would be selected later.

Who else, if not Sanju Samson?

Sanju Samson’s chances are harmed by the seasoned wicketkeeper-bat KL Rahul’s projected return from injury, despite having a strong 55.71 ODI average in 13 games.

The squad will have a backup option in Ishan Kishan, who has established himself as a trustworthy opener-keeper.

Along with Jasprit Bumrah, the tall bowler Prasidh Krishna, who last competed for India against Zimbabwe in Harare on August 20, 2022, before missing time with a stress fracture in his back, might make a comeback into the ODI team for the Asia Cup in 2023.

Prasidh can provide pace and bounce, which will give our speed assault a new dimension. Before selecting the side for the Asia Cup, it will be fantastic if the selectors can watch both Bumrah and Prasidh bowl in the opening T20I against Ireland on August 18.

The BCCI is taking its time to assess the players’ fitness while all the other nations have already unveiled their lineups for the championship.

Despite Shreyas Iyer’s ongoing recovery from back surgery, KL Rahul is mainly healthy and keeps wickets. Both have taken part in match simulations at Bangalore’s National Cricket Academy, and they will soon play a practice match. Following their return from the West Indies tour, the team and NCA’s physiotherapists will evaluate the players’ level of fitness. This is why the team announcement was delayed, the person stated.
